India Unveils National Sports Policy 2025 to Boost Athletic Development

New Delhi - The Indian government has approved the National Sports Policy (NSP) 2025, a comprehensive framework designed to enhance the country's sports ecosystem and promote greater participation at all levels. The policy, cleared by the Union Cabinet under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, replaces the National Sports Policy of 2001. It emphasizes building synergies between society and sports, with a focus on grassroots development, athlete empowerment, and international competitiveness.Key objectives include integrating sports into education through initiatives like the Khelo Bharat Niti 2025, which aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 to create career pathways, improve infrastructure, and foster global aspirations. The policy also highlights the role of sports in engaging the Indian diaspora, potentially opening doors for overseas Indian-origin talent to contribute to national teams. In tandem with the NSP, the government has introduced the National Sports Governance Act 2025, aimed at ensuring athlete-centered, gender-equal, and transparent administration across sports federations.Financial support has seen a significant rise, with the sports budget reaching ₹3,794 crore, marking a 131% increase since the 2014-15 fiscal year. Programs like KIRTI, an AI-powered talent identification system, are set to identify and nurture young athletes nationwide.Officials noted that these reforms build on recent achievements, including India's performance at international events such as the Paris Paralympics and various Asian championships. The policy is expected to drive increased participation and position India as a stronger contender on the global stage.Further details on implementation timelines and specific programs are anticipated in the coming months.
